At Little Oaks Day Nursery, we know that starting school is a big step for both children and parents. That’s why we’re dedicated to helping your little one feel confident, independent, and excited about learning right from the start.
Every child develops at their own pace, so our play-based, child-centred curriculum is designed to support their unique growth and interests. This encouraging style enables us to offer a safe learning space for children to learn the basics that can help with starting school.
We encourage children to:
- Recognise their own name
- Explore numbers through counting, songs, and play
- Recognise some numbers up to five
We help children become more independent by practising things like:
- Opening their packed lunch and eating on their own
- Using a knife and fork- Sitting properly at the table during mealtimes
- Getting dressed and ready in their uniform
Good communication is key, so we:
- Encourage children to listen and concentrate for short periods
- Help them follow simple instructions
- Support them to express their feelings and ideas
- Enjoy sharing stories and chatting with friends
We also focus on physical development by helping children:
- Use the toilet independently and wash their hands
- Dress and undress themselves
- Move confidently by walking, running, jumping, and climbing
- Develop balance and muscle control through play
We support children to:
- Feel confident when away from their main carers
- Recognise and share their emotions
- Try new things and keep trying even when it’s tricky
- Ask for help when they need it
- Take turns, share and make friends
